On 12 August 2026, Her Excellency Ms. Benetia Tumelo Chingapane presented her Letters of Credence to His Excellency Mr. José Antonio Kast, President of the Republic of Chile, at the La Moneda Palace.

The accreditation of Ambassador Chingapane officially recognises her as the diplomatic representative of the Republic of Botswana to the Republic of Chile. It paves the way for her to fully exercise her functions in Chile, thereby enabling bilateral engagements between Botswana and Chile. President Kast (Republican Party) was inaugurated on 11 March 2026 after defeating Ms. Jeannette Jara, a lifelong member of the Communist Party and former Minister of Labour during the 14 December 2025 Presidential Run-off.

Chile is among the most industrialised countries in Latin America, and some of its key industries include mining (copper, coal, and nitrates), manufacturing (food processing, chemicals, and wood), and agriculture (fishing, viticulture, and fruit). The industrial sector in Chile contributes around 32% of GDP and employs 23% of the working population. Botswana and Chile are heavily reliant on the mining industry and prioritise national economic diversification. As the world´s largest producer of copper, Chile relies heavily on the mineral, while for Botswana it is diamonds. Beyond mining, other potential areas for cooperation between the two countries include agriculture, science and innovation, health, construction and tourism, highlighted during the meeting with President Kast.

Botswana established diplomatic relations with Chile on 13 October 1997. Ambassador Chingapane is accredited to Chile and covers the country on a non-resident basis from Brasilia, Brazil. In contrast, Chile is accredited to Botswana through the country's Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa.
